Hey guys, for anyone who can make it, we’re going to have a benefit concert/worship night in Denton. This is for one of my good friends who has a 7 month old baby fighting cancer. The concert is free, we’re just asking people to bring donations. It’s going to be an awesome night of rocking out, worshipping, and hanging out, so come if you can!!

Every Guy’s Ambition

Every guy has within himself an innate desire to conquer the world. It comes out in various forms. Business, politics, sports, etc. There’s just an ambition that drives us. The desire to be great, to be brave, to be heroic, to conquer. But so often it feels like a dangling carrot that is forever out of reach. No matter how hard we try and how successful we seem to be, it never seems to be enough. Why can we not quell that desire within us? Is it a pointless drive that can never be fulfilled? Perhaps we weren’t meant to quell the desire. Perhaps it’s there for a reason, and we just need to learn the purpose of it. The problem is that we generally do NOT know the purpose, or how to channel it, so it ends up being driven by our insecurities, our feelings of incompleteness. The ambition then becomes a way of proving ourselves, which was not the original intent. But does that make the seed of ambition itself wrong? I don’t believe so. Not if it’s something that God put in us. And I believe He did.

Genesis 1:28 says, “God blessed them and said to them, ‘Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground.’” It was the calling of man from the beginning, as far back as Adam. Fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over every living creature. It was a God-given assignment. And with it came the desire within man to increase and to conquer. Of course, that ambition was quickly misdirected when man sinned and tasted shame and insecurity for the first time. Nothing will misguide ambition like insecurity. With insecurity as the engine, our ambition drives us to impress, to compare, and even to conquer other people, which was not the calling we were given. Because of our misguided ambition, the Lord had to make it clear that our drive was not meant to be for selfish pursuits. Philippians 2:3 “Do nothing out of selfish ambition…” And yet for many of us, that is precisely what drives us. The need to conquer in order to prove ourselves. The drive to be successful, to be remembered, to be respected. A misguided ambition. And even though we misuse it so often, it’s still very interesting to me that God put ambition itself within us. Merriam-Webster defines ambition as the desire to achieve a particular end. I believe that ever since God called man to “fill the earth and subdue it” we are, as men, forever carrying a desire to conquer. And perhaps if we would learn to find our identity completely in God, our sense of self in His affirmation, the ambition rooted within us could be used to fulfill the purposes God has for our lives, rather than a means to prove ourselves.

The songs we sing….

In a worship setting we often sing songs that say things like, “You’re all I’m living for”…..”In everything I do, I honor you”…..”I live for you”…..”You’re all I want”…..etc. But if we’re honest with ourselves, these lyrics are not entirely true. We don’t completely live for God 100% of the time with no exceptions. We don’t completely honor God 100% of the time with no exceptions. And He is often not all that we want. We tend to want many things. We are selfish creatures by nature. One minute we are surrendered to Him and living for Him, the next we are living for ourselves. The Word says that the spirit and the sinful nature are in conflict with each other (Galatians 5). Even when our spirit has been made perfect, our mind and heart are still on a journey to be made more like Jesus. And it’s a lifelong journey.

So should we feel guilty that we are not exactly telling the truth when we sing these songs? Should we be judgmental towards ourselves and towards others, using guilt as our motivator to try harder and harder until we become more perfect? Should we even sing these songs to begin with? I think we should. I think we should sing them with an understanding that we are saying these things in faith, knowing we are in a process of being made like Jesus….a process that will be ongoing for the rest of our time on this earth. Being guilt driven and judgmental will not make us more like Jesus. Knowing the Father and walking closely with Him is what makes us more like Him. We may not be perfect in all we do physically, and we may not “live for Him” in our earthly bodies all the time the way we’d like, but we are on a journey of walking with Him and being made like Him. And I believe He loves this process. He loves to see us learn and grow, just like any good parent delights in seeing their child learn and grow. He is patient with us when we blow it. He knows how we are formed, and He has compassion on us as a father has compassion on his children (Ps. 103). So I would say it’s ok to sing “You’re all I’m living for”, even though it’s only a matter of time before we blow it again. We can sing it in faith, knowing we are on a journey to make it a complete reality in our lives.

God’s Little Plans

I’ve been contemplating lately how much God has plans for us. I mean, I know He has a “plan” for us, for our life as a whole, the big picture….but I also think He has small, daily plans for us. “’For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’” (Jeremiah 29:11). You know, He’s our Father. 1 John 3:2 “Dear friends, now we are children of God”. Have you ever stopped to think about all the little plans a parent has for their child? I mean the daily things? Think about a mom and her 1 year old baby boy. Every morning, unbeknownst to the little guy, mom has plans for his day. She plans to get him out of his crib, give him lots of hugs, talk to him, change his diaper, feed him breakfast. She plans to clean him up and let him play with toys while she does things around the house. She plans to take him with her as they go run errands and visit friends. Maybe she will get him a new outfit or toy, or will take him to see some animals. On and on the scenario goes. Of course, the little guy has no clue what mom has planned. He just enjoys the process. Obviously mom and dad, if they are good parents, will have a big picture plan as well. They plan for him to attend school, go to church with them, go to college, meet a great girl one day and have a family of his own. They plan for him to become a man of character and responsibility. They plan to celebrate him, discipline him, and love him through everything. They may plan for him to have other brothers and sisters to grow up with. So there is a big plan and a bunch of little daily plans. I believe its the same with God and us. God has an overall plan for your life, but He also has little daily plans. He wants to hang out with you today. He wants to show you new things you haven’t seen before. He wants to enjoy the journey with you. Every day has little plans if we’ll be open to them. I want to encourage you, God loves you, and He has a LOT of plans for you!

Fast Summer

Hey guys, sorry I haven’t blogged in a while! It was a crazy summer. I can’t believe we’re already halfway through Sep! Just an update for you…we’re getting ready to re-release the Freedom Calls cd under Tate Music Group on Nov 2, 2010. TMG has already started pushing radio play with stations they are in relationship with (using By The Cross as a single), and we have some other things in the works as far as marketing and promotions. I’m really excited to see how it unfolds.

Easter Weekend

Sorry I haven’t posted in a while. It’s been a crazy end of 09 and beginning of 2010, but it’s been really good as well. Easter weekend was great. We had an outreach with The Bridge Church in Denton, Tx, where we mowed lawns and painted some houses in the community. We also had a team visiting from England that helped with the outreach and various other projects. They were awesome and a real blessing. There’s some exciting news around the corner music-wise, but I can’t announce it just yet. So there’s the plug to peak your interest. Haha

Pastor Duane had a great message today on getting a new perspective of Christ. So many times our first impression of something, or someone, is not at all how it really is, or how they really are. First impressions can be so misleading, especially depending on who was presenting the message. I’m sure many of us have had those encounters with people who present God as an angry, uncaring, unmerciful, ‘ready to beat us over the head with a stick’ kind of God. But that’s not who He is. So we really need a deeper revelation of Christ to see Him for who He really is. It was a great message. As a side note, God has been speaking to me about 2 core fears that we all tend to deal with, so I’ll try to write on that soon. That’s it for now. Have a blessed week!
